About Us

Wild turkey are a common site Schlagel Creek Ranch is located just 5 miles south of Valentine, Nebraska and just 1 -1/2 miles west of highway 20. Our ranch borders two miles of the beautiful Niobrara River and Schlagel Creek Canyon. Scenic views abound on this working cattle ranch, where rolling sandhills give way to pine covered river breaks and mixed hardwood covered valleys. This unique blend of habitats and our ranch management philosoply, which values the needs of wildlife as high as all others, has resulted in excellent wildlife habitat. Numerous wildlife species abound here including; white-tail and mule deer, wild turkey, grouse, pheasants, coyotes and several species of waterfowl. Occassionally, even a majestic bald eagle can be seen soaring above the river valley!

We are a family owned ranch operated by Steve, Debbie and Chancy Hansen. The ranch has been in our family for the past 16 years, although we have only lived here permanently the last 4 years. Steve and Debbie grew up in western Iowa where their love of the outdoors and Steves interests in wildlife and fishing was fostered. He went on to receive degrees in Fisheries Biology and most recently, before moving to our ranch permanently, worked for 20 + years in Alaska in fisheries and wildlife management.

Wild turkey are a common site It was this love of the outdoors that first attracted our family to the Valentine area and the "Sandhills of Nebraska". The vast unspoiled landscapes, abundant wildlife, it's many area fishing lakes and friendly people (atlthough we don't have many people out here... and that was part of the attraction too) all convinced us that this is a pretty special place! We are now very pleased to be able to share the areas many bounties with you. We are sure that once you visit the area you will also come away with the feeling that this is a special place .... just don't tell everybody else (only your friends) because we want to keep it special!
